Honest good working local company. The amount they quoted me on the phone was the price I paid after the service was completed.
Chimney and duct work in Perth Amboy, NJ
Perth Amboy combines two things that are individually manageable and awkward together: old masonry and waterfront weather. A stack that would age slowly a few miles inland takes wind, driven rain and salt air here, and the components on top of it have a shorter life because of it.

The short answer
Brushwork, surveys, repairs and laundry ducts throughout Perth Amboy, and the top of the stack gets more of our attention here than the inside of it.
What we find on these jobs
The pattern here is weather acting on age. Mortar joints on the exposed face of a stack open sooner than they do inland, because wind-driven rain drives water into them and salt does not help what happens next; the visible result is usually a difference between the weather side of a chimney and the sheltered side that is obvious once somebody points it out. Caps fitted adequately for an inland roof work loose, and a lifted cap leaves a shaft open to rain and to whatever is nesting nearby. And flashing that copes perfectly well with ordinary rain gets beaten by rain arriving nearly horizontally, which is why the leak in these houses is so often described as intermittent — it is not intermittent, it is directional.

Expert setup, high-powered vacuums, and absolutely no dust residue. Excellent work.
Water had been leaking around the chimney flashing, but the repair solved it completely. The crew sealed and reinforced the affected area with precision. Rain is no longer a concern. The workmanship looks strong and durable.
Questions from Perth Amboy
One side of our chimney looks much worse than the other.
That is the weather side and it is normal here. Wind-driven rain and salt work on the exposed face far harder than on the sheltered one, so open joints and spalling brick show up there first. It is also the side that decides when repointing becomes worthwhile.
Should the cap be stainless?
This close to the water, yes. Galvanised will do a job for a while and then start giving it back; stainless, sized to the flue and mechanically fastened, is the version that stays put and stays intact. The price difference is small next to doing it twice.
The leak only shows up in certain weather.
Then it is almost certainly flashing rather than the crown. Flashing fails to wind-driven rain from a particular direction; crowns fail to prolonged soaking rain regardless of direction. That distinction narrows the job before anybody climbs up.
How often should a chimney near the water be looked at?
Annually, like anywhere else, but with more attention to the metalwork and the mortar than to what is inside the flue. The failure here tends to be weather rather than deposit, and weather does not take a season off.
