Five kinds of building, and what each one means
Streetcar suburb
Bloomfield itself. Mostly built before 1940, dense near the centre and along the avenue, looser further out. Chimneys built for coal, converted twice, almost never resized — which is the single commonest finding we write up.

Divided housing
Two- and three-family stock where one masonry stack carries several flues added at different times. Before anything else, somebody has to work out which shaft ends at your appliance — and whatever the previous owner passed on about that is correct roughly half the time.

Dense pre-war
Attached and semi-attached housing where the roof is reached by a hatch rather than a ladder, and access is settled before the appointment rather than discovered during it. Smoke chambers here are frequently unparged.

Single-family housing from the fifties onward, generally easier to reach and with correctly sized flues at the outset. The recurring work here is crowns, flashing and dryer runs rather than heavy deposit.

Coastal
Towns close enough to the water that wind and salt matter. Caps that come loose, crowns that weather faster, and flashing that takes wind-driven rain from a direction the original detail did not anticipate.

The far west of the area: farmhouse and mill-hamlet townships where a quarter of the homes or more burn oil or propane that no utility ever inspects, stone chimneys carry their second or third fuel, and the drive between jobs is part of the job.
